Star Lake '12 National Western Blog Report #11 (1/17/12)
Yesterday was definitely a travel day and as we all went different directions. Our crew had packed the trailers and headed back home to the ranch. A short rest and then it is off to Fort Worth for the Southwestern Exposition National Hereford Show. The cattle will be evaluated by Judge Doug Satree of Montague, Texas on Monday, January 30th. In Fort Worth they do a great job of making everyone feel welcome and activities include socials, the pen show and the Cowtown Select sale. For many it is a very "relaxed" environment and a great way to wrap up the end of the National Show season. We are offering a really nice bull calf in the Cowtown Select Sale - STAR KKH SSF Keyper 316Y ET is an April 2011 son of 2-Time Denver Supreme Champion Shock & Awe out of the renowned Keysha 949 cow. Keyper is listed as Lot 1 in the Cowtown Select catalog and further information and his video can be looked at on the Star Lake website.
Last night we closed our January Internet sale at 7 pm (Central). This sale, our Stock Show Internet Sale featured outstanding lots from end to end. We sincerely thank all of you that signed on and especially the many bidders and buyers. Look for our Sweetheart Internet Sale coming on line in early February. Just what you need for that hard to buy for Valentine!
As many of you are aware the National Western and the City of Denver have been discussing "options" on the future of the Stock Show facilities for many years. The National Western last year announced that they were looking to partner with Gaylord Entertainment to create a new complex out east of the city by the airport. Well now the Denver city politics and governing committees are involved so don't look for a quick resolution. I do know that sitting in the arena stands for any period proves that Hereford enthusiasts are as hardy as the stock; because those wooden seats have to be the narrowest and most uncomfortable places to sit in the Rockies. It was reported on the news while we were there that the City was looking to put in a bid for hosting the 2022 Olympic Games at an estimated cost of 1.5 Billion dollars! Wow, I find it interesting that the City would pursue a one-time event while not taking steps to save and improve an event with a hundred plus years of history that annually impacts the local economy to the tune of 100 million dollars in a thirty day window. Common sense and politics never mix well.
I was talking to an "old-timer" of the Hereford breed while in Denver. His thoughts may impact the need for a livestock showing complex even more. In his view, most animal judging seems to be getting so high-tech that the numbers and pedigrees are all that are needed. He suggested giving the judge a printout with EPDs and a smart phone with those QR codes (those little boxes that look like mazes) that are popping up everywhere and you can leave the cattle, feed, trucks, trailers, crew and fitters at home. Heck if that's the case I suggest having the "High-Tech National Western" on a beach in Hawaii and leave the Denver Crud at home as well. For the Junior Show you can bring pictures of the kids but they have to stay home as well. See you at the luau at the AHA cabana!!!
