The trip to Fort Worth was uneventful...the cattle made the 5 hour journey well and we are setup in the newer barn that is adjacent to the show ring. From the looks of things it appears that the entire barn will be filled exclusively with Herefords as there is a great turn out of Texas cattle. For the most part today will be the rest of folks moving in and getting the road grime off the cattle as we prepare for show day. Weather today is to reach into the 60's and tomorrow near the 70 degree mark. When we left Iowa yesterday it was a balmy 17 degrees so this warm weather is NICE!!! I'll be the one in the barn with the flip-flops and Tommy Bahama wardrobe.
You may have wondered on today's title. As most of us in the cattle business are from a rural environment when we head to an event like the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show it's a trip to the big city. One of the things we learn is we aren't in the sticks anymore when crime affects us. Last night one of the ranch trucks had the drivers side window smashed in and then the contents of the cab ransacked. While there was not much of value in the cab (except a couple of packs of smokes that were stolen) the lesson remains we are in a different culture than home. Keep all valuables out of sight and remove them from the vehicles. While the hotel has "security" they can't be everywhere. The advantage of the big city is within two hours the window was replaced where-as at home in the country we would still be telling the story and waiting a week for parts.
One of the things they do with this show that is different than most is the show is dedicated to specific individuals in honor of their service, dedication or history with the breed. This year the Polled Hereford Show is dedicated in honor of JoAnne & JC Rogers. This tremendous couple worked tirelessly for years on behalf of the Texas Polled Hereford Association. Their efforts were more than a job as they raised and exhibited their own cattle as well. Their enthusiasm, personalities and dedication made them both an institution throughout the region. The honorarium for this year's polled show is well deserved...Congrats to you both JC and JoAnne!
The Horned Herefords show is dedicated in honor of Pied Piper Ranch... Moore on them tomorrow.
We want to welcome a new partner, Belle Point Ranch from Lavaca, Arkansas who has purchased the interest we were selling in STAR Legendary Details 319X that we offered in Denver. This April 5th bull calf was Reserve Division Champion at the National Western finishing right behind the eventual Reserve Grand Champion. We thank Belle Point Ranch for their purchase in 319X and for the confidence and trust in Star Lake branded Hereford genetics.
